Monotype Internship 2024

During my internship at Monotype, I followed a 2 months course on the fundamentals of Kanji and Kana design lead by the designers Akira Kobayashi and Ryota Doi. I learned to draw the different components both in Gothic and Mincho styles, proportions, optical illusions, how to deal with thickness with a various number of strokes and the different settings that allow to convey different visual meanings and historical references. I draw from graph paper to screen, helped by a calligraphy class I took during my entire stay. During the last weeks, I was tutored by Fontworks designers Yuya Nakamura and Shunya Morita and applied the knowledge I just gained to design around 40 kanji for the ongoing revival project Tsukushi. Later on, my colleagues gave me the chance to talk about my experience with them learning the basics of Japanese Type Design as a French Latin Design student during a conference at ATypI 25 Copenhagen.
