Reading in a foreign language is widely recognized as a highly effective way of making language progress. However, a language with a different writing system can be an obstacle for the learner. Bilingual books are set to be an alternative, but suffer from functional problems, identification of the use and economic obstacles that affect the learning efficiency of the majority of their readers. This post-graduate dissertation examines bilingual books and was the beginning of a reflection to design a bilingual book that makes reading more accessible in Japanese, didactic and practical for an audience of intermediate-level learners.
